The Hortobagy ranks among the best sites to go birding in Europe. Indeed there are plenty of birds around with some specialties making it worthwhile for a visit. Or two. Parts of the wider area are accessible but for those wanting to see some of the specialties, thus accessing the restricted areas a licensed guide will be necessary.
Early spring sees the arrival of various ducks. Birding really picks up in April with the arrival of many migrant species and ideally by the beginning of May everybody should be here. Breeding activity is the highest at this time (May-June) just like anywhere in the northern hemisphere.
The high summer besides being really hot can bring some huge thunderstorms.
Autumn migration begins already at the end of august when some of the northern migrants arrive back and move through. One of the highlight is the huge masses of cranes (best in October) and geese (best in November).
